FTD "Sun" Project out in August 2012 :
'A Boy From Tupelo - Complete 53-55 Recordings' the deluxe book + 3CD set has been announced for August release. For over five years “Follow That Dream” /Sony Elvis Committee president Ernst Jorgensen has been working on the Definitive Elvis At Sun Records & book, which is possibly the most ambitious project of his entire career. The Genesis of rock n roll has to be the combination of Elvis and the Memphis based Sun Records Company, and at last this outstanding labour of love is about to be published. This will be no ordinary volume of facts and figures. It will be a massive superlative Elvis Presley production including the rarest of pictures, recording data, the real story behind Elvis’ time at Sun with unique Elvis artifacts, photographs, together with a companion of Elvis Sun recordings on THREE CDs which will excite your senses. "A Boy From Tupelo - Complete 53-55 Recordings" includes for the first time in one collection every known Elvis Presley SUN master and outtake, plus two private records Elvis paid for with his own money, as well as thrilling radio and concert performances from the period. This 3 CD package features 10 previously-unreleased cuts. The accompanying book is, in essence, a fully-illustrated travelogue. It thoughtfully details the birth of Elvis' career through |

facts, anecdotes, documentation, many rare photos, and a succinct narrative. Independence Day 1954 is when this uniquely American saga begins, less than 24 hours before his first professional recording session, and it ends in December 1955, when the rights to Elvis' SUN tapes officially expire, and the singer leaves Sam Phillips to record for RCA. This is Elvis Presley before he becomes world-famous, and the mystery of how this amazing young man readies himself for stardom, achieving success on a level that no one could have dreamed possible. All audio has been re-mastered and restored as best we could, but Disc 3 has pretty rough audio. The book is 512 pages in 12” by 12” format and includes more than 500 photos of which about 200 are previously unpublished. If you are not an expert in this period of Elvis’ career, a lot more photos will be new to you. Many familiar photos will be seen in best ever quality, but since this is a historical document, there will also be many images of less quality, included for their rarity value and support of the story. The book also includes, for the first time, Steve Sholes’ original notes on the Sun tapes. The project will come in a slip case (like “Young man With The Big Beat”) that holds both the book and the CD holder (a double album type package). The purchase price noted is EU:99 euro = US$126

| Bassist Donald 'Duck' Dunn dies |
|
Grammy-winning American bassist Donald "Duck" Dunn, who helped shape the blues and soul music scenes in the 1960s and 1970s, died Sunday in Tokyo. He was 70. A former member of legendary band Booker T and the MG's, Dunn died in his sleep in a hotel room in the Japanese capital after performing two shows at Blue Note Tokyo. As a house bass player at the Stax label in Memphis, Dunn's fingers worked the frets on a number of classics, including Elvis sessions on July 24 and 25 1973. As well as playing sessions with names like Neil Young, Eric Clapton and Jerry Lee Lewis, Dunn earned himself a little Hollywood glitter when he appeared as himself in "The Blues Brothers" starring comedians John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd. |

Elvis sings downtown:
Music filled Scales Street last Friday night as shoppers took advantage of discounts and special treats in downtown Reidsville, North Carolina during the annual Girls Night Out event. The event is held in conjunction with Mother’s Day, giving women the opportunity to shop and enjoy treats in Reidsville.
Twenty-nine stores stayed open late for the event. Each store picked an Elvis-inspired theme highlighting their stores. The Fish Market’s theme was “Clam Bake.” Reidsville Bicycles’ theme was “C.C. Ryder.” Dent, Ding, Discount’s theme was “Crying in the Chapel” and the store was giving away a veil and bouquet. Reidsville Florist’s theme was “Blue Hawaii.”
Everyone who entered the store received leis and could sign up for a wine tasting and a raffle. La Boutique was decorated like a jail, with its theme being “Jail House Rock.” Everyone who entered received a “get out of jail free” discount card.
Further up the road, Elvis Presley, impersonated by Wayne Euliss, was drawing in crowds of people. Bleachers were set up for people to sit and enjoy the music. Others danced near the bleachers.
“He seems to be very popular,” Main Street Manager Terresia Scoble said. “I just hope people are going downtown and shopping too.”

| 10 years after Otis Blackwell |
|
Ten years ago today, one of rock 'n' roll's most talented songwritters passed away. Otis Blackwell worked as a singer/songwriter/pianist in the 50's, 60's and 70's. Although his own recordings never met with much success, many of the songs that he wrote went on to become very well-known, million-selling songs. Blackwell's most successful song was Don't Be Cruel, which went to number one in 1956, as did another Elvis song the following year that had been written by Otis, All Shook Up. It had been inspired a shaken bottle of Pepsi Cola.
The success of Don't Be Cruel gave a jolt to the songwriting career of the talented Otis Blackwell. He wrote more songs for Presley, among them One Broken Heart For Sale and Return To Sender. Blackwell admired Presley, and Presley looked to Blackwell for inspiration on the arrangements of some of his early pop songs. Otis Blackwell sometimes wrote songs under the pseudonym John Davenport (such as 'Fever'). Following a lengthy illness, Otis passed away on May 6, 2002 in Nashville. Otis Blackwell had a very successful run as a prolific writer of nearly 1,000 songs. He was 71.

The Day Elvis Came to Cleveland:
Fifty four years ago Aline Landrum (right) met Elvis and his band in a café in Cleveland - she recently told her story to James Hefley of the Cleveland Historical Society. On September 12, 1957, a black Cadillac pulled up to the Little Shamrock, a small café that was located on the south end of Cleveland where Highway 105 meets Washington Avenue. In the car were band members and a singer who had done a show in Houston and were headed north, probably on their way back to Memphis. The singer was Elvis Presley. They had stopped at the Little Shamrock for breakfast and to fill the car up with gas before continuing their journey. Aline Landrum was the waitress who served Elvis that morning. A woman named Dorothy Briscoe took two photos of Elvis shown below; one outside and one inside the café. Mrs Landrum, who still lives in Cleveland, recalls that Elvis ordered a big breakfast consisting of two eggs, an order of bacon, double order of toast, coffee, pancakes, a piece of chocolate pie and a Pepsi Cola. Go here to the full news paper story.

Will Lisa Marie ever perform with an Elvis Hologram? In a video interview she is quite clear about that: "I personally couldn't do that." Although she shies away from the trend, she casts no judgment on those who do. "I just think if things are tasteful that's good," she explains. "If not, then no." Here's the link to the interview.

Tupelo gambles with bigger Elvis Festival budget:
The Tupelo Association hopes higher quality of entertainment will draw in bigger crowds to the 2012 Elvis Festival set for May 31-June 3. For the first time in the history of this festival, three of the past five National Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artists will perform at the Lyric Theatre. Featured artists include Bill Cherry, the 2009 Ultimate ETA, Brandon Bennett, D.J. Fontana, Sonny Burgess and the Pacers and the reigning 2011 Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist Cody Slaughter. The Main Street board has approved a budget with proposed income of $167,418 and expenses of $247,622. Jim Goodwin, the immediate past president of the board, says the figure does not include money from Fairpark gate ticket sales or from beer sales. He says last year walk-up ticket sales were about $60,000 and beer sales were around $15,000. Goodwin says the talent budget rose from $40,000 to $80,000

This photo is NOT ELVIS :

It is a scene shot for the purpose of a Canadian documentary in 1982. That picture has often been discussed in various forums. Besides, Elvis has not ever had a license plate with 'EAP' written on it. This picture is very clear and sharp, is taken from the rear. It is therefore surprising that there is no photo of this same scene showing the face of Elvis at the wheel of that car and that, given the number of spectators waiting at the gates. (which could have photographed Elvis) All these factors (among others) confirm that this scene has been prepared. Also, when Elvis died, there were no stoplights on Elvis Presley Boulevard (outside the gate) and it is in the picture. It is certainly not Elvis in the picture.
